Surfing

Surfing has become more than just an adventure; it is now a very identifiable culture that exists around the world. Surfing is most popular in areas with the proper mix of warm weather and beach culture, such as California, Australia, Hawaii, etc... Surfing can be both a leisurely adventure and a more intense adventure that involves a real commitment. In the more popular surfing locations, lessons, camps, and rental equipment is readily available. If you are in search of a more intense surfing adventure, there are secluded and extreme opportunities available.

There are different styles of surfing that can be explored as well. Short board surfing is much more intense and focused around power, agility, and speed, while long board surfing is about enjoying the ride and is much more relaxed and smooth. Both types of surfing are very popular. Most beginners will start their surfing adventures on a long board as it is easier to learn basic technique and hone their surfing skills.

As the surfing culture has evolved over the last few decades, so have the rules and etiquette involved with participating in the sport. Many surfers can be very territorial and can be aggressive to outsiders or beginners who are still learning. Make sure you ask around for the surf spots that best suit your needs.

Surfing also entails risk and having a good understanding of the risks involved will make for a much more enjoyable experience. Drowning, falling and hitting obstructions (such as coral) and collisions are the most common types of dangers associated with surfing. To avoid increasing the chance of any of these dangers you should be prepared to handle the conditions you attempt to surf on. By attempting waves or surf conditions that are above your ability, you are placing yourself and other around you in danger. Make sure you do your homework on each surfing location before venturing out. Each location is different. Waves can break differently, tides affect the coast in very different ways and riptides and other currents can present unforeseen dangers that you will want to be prepared for. Once you have a good handle on the basics, your surfing adventures will provide for an exciting and rewarding experience.
