Snorkeling

Snorkeling is one of the most relaxing and easy ways to experience the world that lies below the surface of the water all over the world. Snorkeling can take place in rivers and lakes, but most popular are ocean coastlines. The ability to swim and breathe through a snorkel are the only prerequisites when it comes to snorkeling. It is always important to consult a local guide or instructor for a number of reasons before starting on your snorkeling adventure. Depending on your snorkeling location, there will be a number of things to look out for. There may be some species of marine life that have known to be aggressive, or more importantly, there could be conservation rules and regulations. Snorkeling, if not done properly and respectfully, can damage habitats and hurt marine life. Coral is usually the most effected organism by an over abundance of snorkeling done in a particular area. Simply standing on or pushing off of coral with your feet can irreparably damage a coral reef habitat. Make sure you are aware of the conservation rules in a particular area before venturing out on your snorkeling adventure.
Depending on how exposed the snorkeling habitat you are adventuring out to is, it may be necessary to wear life jackets. Wind and tide conditions can change a calm snorkeling location to rough seas and potentially dangerous situation in a matter of minutes. Make sure to research your individual location before setting out.
The only other equipment recommended to take on your snorkeling trip is fins. Fins can greatly increase the ground a snorkeler can cover and allow them to dive deeper using less energy. Fins greatly increase the experience of snorkeling and allow for more mobility and opportunity.
No matter where in the world you are, as long as you are close to the ocean there will most likely be some snorkeling opportunities nearby. However, the most popular and enjoyable snorkeling opportunities are within warm and temperate seas in coral rich areas. The Great Barrier Reef and the coast of off the Yucatan in South America provide for a couple of the most hospitable snorkeling environments on earth. If you are planning a trip to warmer climates, make sure you do some research on the best local snorkeling spots.
