Sailing

Sailing as a recreation has become increasingly popular over the last few decades. It has become not only a means of transportation but a great way to experience the oceans, lakes and rivers this world has to offer. If you are relatively inexperienced with sailing, it is more of an adventure than you may think. Although, from a distance, it looks relaxing and care free, there is much more sport, danger, and skill required to sail properly. Depending on the size of the boat and the sailing conditions you are in, it can be exhilarating and very challenging. Experience and knowledge are key to having a successful sailing adventure.

Sailing also provides a great way to explore other water bound adventures. Many scuba, snorkeling, swimming holes, secluded beaches, and caves can only be reached by traveling by boat. What better way to make your way to your adventures by utilizing another adventure!

Before sailing to your next adventure though, it is important that you learn as much as possible before you head out. Sailing incorporates terminology that most people are not familiar with on a daily basis. Starboard - right, port - left, forward or fore - front, aft - rearward, bow - forward part of the hull, stern - aft part of the hull, beam - the widest part. Vertical spars are masts, horizontal spars are booms if they can swing around and hit the sailor, gaffs if they are too high to reach and poles if they are within reach but cannot hit the sailor. Most of this terminology you will pick up after a couple of sailing adventures or if you have a captain that spends some time with you to make sure you understand. If the conditions get tough and sailing orders are being yelled out, it is important that you know what to do or at least what is going on. Make sure your group is prepared for an adventure, as that is what sailing is, and most importantly, they want to participate to make sure everyone has a great time and arrives safely to their destination.
